Directory Plus MANCOS MUSH

The Mancos Mush Committee is sad to announce that we have cancelled our race planned for February 2009. This does NOT mean however, that there will be no mushing events in Mancos. Quite the contrary, we’re pleased to direct you to two other events: San Juan Stage Racing is planning a series of stage races from January 22 – Jan 25, 2009 www.sanjuanstagerace.com La Plata Paw – a family event scheduled for February 14 & 15, 2009 and hosted by Colorado Mountain Mushers. See details below We hope you will visit Mancos for one of these two great events.

Local and regional winter dog sportsters will meet in the beautiful San Juan National Forest near Mancos, Colorado, for a fun weekend of competition and camaraderie. We anticipate 30-40 competitors, some of whom will be Colorado Mountain Mushers (CMM) club members traveling from locations all over the Rocky Mountain region. Local mushers and skijorers are encouraged to attend, and we are offering competitions especially geared toward smaller teams.

The two-day competition will include dog sledding races with 4-, 6-, and 8-dog classes running 4, 6, and 8 miles, respectively. There will also be two mid-distance classes of approximately 15 and 30 miles. Ski-jor (skiing with 1-2 dogs) and cani-cross (snowshoeing with 1-2 dogs) will have 1- and 3-mile courses. Race classes are open to older teenagers (with parental consent) and adults. We are also considering a very short course for children. Speaking of children, Mark and Sandy Schwartz, local mushers and CMM club members, will be presenting their enormously popular dog sledding program to interested area schools this winter.

Saturday night will offer dinner for the competitors, followed by a dog sledding presentation that will be open to the general public. Cash prizes will be awarded for teams that place. Each team that finishes a race will receive a ribbon for finishing. A raffle for all human participants is anticipated to offer prizes and gas-money cash. Entrants will receive swag bags containing dog-related items, tourist information & local specialties.

Colorado Mountain Mushers, a non-profit recreational club dedicated to promoting winter sled dog sports in the Rocky Mountain region for over 10 years, is organizing this event with the help of local club members and area volunteers.
